Steel rollers remain an excellent choice across a wide range of conveyor applications. Where corrosion, roller weight and the reduced belt-damage risk of HDPE are not major concerns, a premium steel roller can be the most practical and economical solution.

Where steel makes sense

Consider steel where corrosion is limited, roller weight is manageable and the existing rollers are achieving satisfactory service life.

Corrosion is not a major issue
In dry or relatively benign conditions, where corrosion is not driving roller failures, steel remains a dependable choice.
Cost and value come first
Premium steel can be an economical option when the application does not need the additional benefits of HDPE.
Smaller belt widths and shorter rollers
Shorter rollers can mean fewer kilograms to save by changing shell material. Compare the actual weight of complete rollers.
Existing steel roller life is satisfactory
If steel is already achieving good service life, retaining it can make more sense than changing material without a clear benefit.
Heavy loads and shell rigidity
The stiffness and structural strength of a steel shell suit heavy loads where resistance to shell deflection matters. Select the shell, shaft and bearings to suit the applied load and roller length.

What to specify

Check the shell, shaft, bearings and seals against roller loading, shell length and operating conditions.

Load
Operating load, uneven load sharing and any impact at loading points.
Roller diameter
Select for belt speed and loading. Diameter affects rotational speed and bearing life.
Shell length and thickness
Check shell deflection and strength over the required roller length, with allowance for wear.
Shaft
Select shaft size for the applied load and span. Shaft deflection affects bearing alignment.
Bearings
Choose the bearing type and size for load, rotational speed and the required service life.
Sealing arrangement
Match the seals to dust, fines, water and washdown exposure to protect the bearings.

Steel or HDPE?

Premium steel is a strong choice where shell rigidity and value take priority, corrosion is limited and steel already delivers satisfactory service life.

Consider HDPE where a non-rusting shell, lower handling weight, quieter running or reduced belt-damage risk would improve the application.

Compare the complete roller

Compare rated load, actual weight, quoted price and expected service life. Shell material alone does not determine load capacity. Include replacement labour and access in the cost comparison.
